For twenty-one years even after the Messenger of Allah (SWT) attained his Prophethood, Kaba was steeped in idol-worship and polytheism pervaded the environment. The pagan Arabs used to perform Hajj according to their own unenlightened customs. Not until the year 8 AH, when the Messenger of Allah (SW) entered Makka in a victorious capacity, when Kaba was cleansed of all the idols and statues. In the year 9 AH Hajj became obligatory. First batch of Muslims from Madina left for Makka under the care of AbuBakr (RA) to perform Hajj according to Islamic rites. Then in the tenth year of Hijrah, Messenger of Allah (SW�) himself set off on the journey to Makka to perform Hajj – his first and last, accompanied by one lakh and twenty four (or forty) thousand followers of Islam. CHARACTERISTIC FEATURES OF HAJJ:rnHajj is indeed divine worship with multi-purpose and multifarious benefits both spiritually and worldly.
