
Egypt under the leadership of the ‘ulama’ the only intellectual elite of the period reacted to the Western occupation, cultural aggression and colonial exploitation. The present work analyses the socio-political role of the Jamiah Al-Azhar and sketches the biographical notes, character and achievements of its prominent and leading ‘ulama’ during the important period (1798-1870).
